Protect Your Home: Fire Equipment You Need For Your Home

Posted on

Residential fires can be devastating. They can cause emotional trauma, property damage, and loss of life. Reduce these risks. Equip your home with the necessary fire safety equipment. If you're like most homeowners, you might not know what type of fire equipment you need in your home. That lack of knowledge can put you and your family at risk for serious injuries. If you're not sure what type of equipment you need for your home, read the list below. Here are four types of fire equipment you need to safeguard your family in the event of a residential fire.

Smoke Detectors

Look around your house. If your home is well-equipped, you should see at least one smoke detector in every room. That should include living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens. You should also have smoke detectors in the laundry areas. If you have a multi-story home, be sure to install smoke detectors on both floors. That way, you have protection throughout the house. If you have battery-powered smoke detectors, be sure to check the batteries about once a month. That way, you know your smoke detectors are ready for an emergency.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are another important part of your home fire protection plan. Unfortunately, many homeowners don't install fire extinguishers in their homes. Or, they install the wrong types of fire extinguishers. There are several types of fire extinguishers to choose from. Each one works on specific materials. For instance, Class A fire extinguishers work on wood, paper, and plastic fires. Class B fire extinguishers work on fires caused by combustible and flammable liquids. Class C fire extinguishers are useful for fires caused by cooking fats, oil, and grease. For maximum fire protection, you should have at least one of each type of fire extinguisher in your home.

Fire Blankets

If you want to make sure your family is protected against fires, now's the time to buy fire blankets. You can use fire blankets to extinguish small fires. But, they can also be used for personal protection during a fire. If your family needs to evacuate during a fire, fire blankets can keep the flames away from you. That's why it's a good idea to keep fire blankets in the kitchen and bedrooms.

Sprinklers

If you're building a home, talk to your home builder about installing fire sprinklers. In the past, fire sprinklers were limited to commercial use. Many Australian homeowners are now having fire sprinklers installed in their homes. Fire sprinklers detect fires and then douse the flames with a steady stream of water.
